New Research Published: Navigating Complexity in Food Loss and Waste Prevention

We are excited to announce the publication of a groundbreaking study titled “Environmental Assessment of Food Loss and Waste Prevention and Reduction Solutions: Navigating the Complexity of Integrating Stakeholders’ Decisions,” authored by María Jesús Muñoz-Torres, Idoya Ferrero-Ferrero, José Vicente Gisbert-Navarro, and Juana María Rivera-Lirio.

This research, conducted under the addresses the intricate decision-making processes involved in food loss and waste prevention and reduction (FLWPR). Using a multi-stakeholder approach, the study evaluates six scenarios encompassing food valorization, redistribution, and consumer behavioral change.

Key Insights:

  • A novel assessment method assigns environmental impacts to consumed product quantities, offering a more precise analysis.
  • A dual perspective combines technical data with preferences from stakeholders like decision-makers, experts, and business students.
  • Results reveal the trade-offs inherent in choosing FLWPR solutions, as improvements in some environmental impact categories can lead to declines in others.

The study provides a framework to help decision-makers balance environmental trade-offs, paving the way for actionable solutions in sustainable food systems.
