The ToNoWaste Winter School 2025 was a resounding success, fostering knowledge exchange and collaboration to address Food Loss and Waste (FLW). Over three days, experts, researchers, and practitioners engaged in interactive sessions, hands-on activities, and discussions that linked science with practice.
Among the highlights of the final day was the visit to CEIP Federico García Lorca, where participants witnessed firsthand how sustainability is being integrated into school canteens through a hands-on culinary workshop organized by Cuinatur.
Cooking as a Family: A Hands-On Approach to Sustainable Eating
As part of the ToNoWaste initiative’s commitment to practical, real-world learning, attendees joined in the “Cooking as a Family” workshop. This activity was designed to promote healthy, sustainable food choices by encouraging people to prepare their own meals with fresh, locally sourced ingredients.
📅 February 26, 2025 – The timeline for the visit included:
- 14:45 Welcome and tour of the school’s dining and kitchen facilities.
- 15:00 Presentation on Cuinatur’s pilot initiative in schools.
- 15:30 Experiential workshop “Cooking as a Family” – Atendees selected from a variety of vegetables, legumes, nuts, and spices to create the best-tasting, most sustainable hummus recipe. In a fun and interactive challenge, families tasted and judged the dishes, selecting the winning team.
The workshop not only reinforced key learnings from the ToNoWaste Science-Based Framework but also showcased how early education and hands-on experiences can inspire long-term behavioral change in food consumption and waste reduction.
A Collaborative Step Forward
This activity perfectly complemented the broader themes of the ToNoWaste Winter School, reinforcing the importance of community-driven initiatives in FLW reduction. The interactive format encouraged participants to reflect on the power of education, behavior change, and experiential learning in shaping a more sustainable food system.
