On February 19, 2025, a provisional agreement between the European Parliament and Council established binding food waste reduction targets for 2030. The targets call for a 10% reduction in food waste from food processing and manufacturing, and a 30% per capita reduction in households, retail, restaurants, and food services.
The EU’s commitment to reducing food waste is an opportunity for projects like ours to accelerate their impact, further supporting the shift towards a more sustainable food system that not only reduces waste but also contributes to achieving broader environmental and social goals, including the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The agreement must now be formally endorsed, and member states will have up to 20 months to align national laws with the new regulations.
This commitment offers a significant opportunity for projects like ToNoWaste to strengthen their efforts in supporting a more sustainable food system. By promoting collaborative action and aligning with the EU’s vision, ToNoWaste contributes to the broader goals of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
As ToNoWaste continues to drive change through research, best practices, and public-private collaboration, it stands poised to support the EU’s larger push toward reducing food waste. By bringing together stakeholders, from farmers and food banks to policymakers and consumers, ToNoWaste aims to play a meaningful part in tackling food waste at all stages of the supply chain.
