Spain Approves Landmark Food Waste Law: A Key Boost for TONOWASTE

On April 1, 2025, the Spanish Government approved Law 1/2025 on the Prevention of Food Loss and Waste, marking a turning point in national efforts to reduce food waste and aligning firmly with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda. This law directly supports and reinforces the mission of TONOWASTE.

The new regulation sets a clear hierarchy of actions for food management across the entire supply chain, prioritizing prevention, reuse, and food donation for social purposes. It promotes more efficient use of natural resources, public awareness, and a circular economy model—all values at the core of the TONOWASTE project.

With this legal framework now in place, TONOWASTE is ideally positioned to implement and scale its technological tools and collaborative strategies in real-life settings across Spain.

Key elements of the law that directly benefit TONOWASTE include:

  • Institutional support for innovation and entrepreneurship in food waste reduction.
  • Mandatory systematic and periodic measurement of food waste, supporting TONOWASTE’s data-driven monitoring systems.
  • A strong emphasis on awareness-raising and education, aligning with TONOWASTE’s development of digital campaigns and training materials.
  • Promotion of structured food donation systems, which can be optimized through TONOWASTE’s traceability and logistics tools.

At a time when climate action, food security, and resource efficiency are urgent global priorities, this law strengthens the collaborative ecosystem between public institutions, private actors, and EU-funded projects like ours.

By integrating this national policy shift, TONOWASTE not only maximizes its impact but also opens up new partnerships and implementation opportunities that contribute to building more sustainable, equitable, and efficient food systems across Europe.
