On Thursday, June 12th, the SOGRES team from Universitat Jaume I (UJI) visited IES Llombai in Burriana (Castellón) to conduct an engaging training session with first-year high school students enrolled in the elective subject “Sustainability.” This initiative was carried out within the framework of the Horizon Europe ToNoWaste project, which aims to promote sustainable, inclusive food systems and reduce food waste through informed decision-making.
An Interactive and Reflective Experience
The session was designed to be highly participatory and dynamic, using visual materials, group dynamics with post-its, and collaborative activities to foster reflection and awareness. Students explored key concepts such as:
- What “sustainability” and “food waste” mean in their daily lives
- The difference between general “waste” and “food waste”
- Real-world situations where food is commonly wasted (at home, school, restaurants…)
- The implications of Spain’s newly approved Food Waste Prevention Law
To enrich the discussion, the session included the screening of project-developed videos and open dialogue spaces that allowed students to share ideas and propose practical solutions.
Fostering Critical Thinking Through Dialogue
This training provided a valuable opportunity for students to engage critically with the issue of food waste and recognize the impact of their everyday actions. The atmosphere was enthusiastic and thought-provoking, thanks to the active participation and openness of the students.
The SOGRES-UJI team would like to extend heartfelt thanks to IES Llombai for their warm welcome, and to the students for their genuine interest and collaboration.
We will continue working together toward a fairer, more inclusive and sustainable food system—starting with awareness and education in the classroom.
