ToNoWaste co-creation workshop energises “Food Connects” symposium

Vienna — 4 September 2025. At the D-A-CH Symposium on Nutrition Education: Food Connects – Research-Based Teaching and Learning in Nutrition Education Between Diversity and Community Culture, the ToNoWaste project hosted an OLL workshop titled “Co-creation of concepts for raising awareness about the prevention and reduction of food waste.”

The session brought together teachers, education researchers and experts, and education students to collaboratively shape fresh ideas for teaching about food loss and waste. Following a concise introduction to ToNoWaste and early findings on challenges and solutions, participants moved into interactive group work.

Drawing on visual inspiration from photos captured during the ToNoWaste Winter School 2025 in Valencia, attendees selected images that reflected different facets of food waste in urban settings and discussed why these images resonated. Framed by a future cross-age, transdisciplinary school curriculum on food waste, the group then reflected on key theoretical and practical challenges in bringing this topic to the classroom.

In the final segment, participants explored didactic tools and strategies to help overcome those challenges—identifying approaches to make learning concrete, engaging, and scalable across grades and disciplines.

Despite a small group—likely a sign that the theme is still emerging within the symposium’s community—feedback was very positive, and discussions were lively and engaged. ToNoWaste plans to return for next year’s symposium.
