With more than 1.2 million tonnes of food lost or wasted annually along the entire value chain, food waste remains a major challenge in Austria. 26 May is a day set aside in Austria to raise awareness of this issue, and it provides a valuable opportunity to share best practices.
According to WWF estimates, an average household in Austria discards food worth around €100 per month, while additional costs generated through production, transport, storage and disposal contribute indirectly to higher food prices.
